Before You Hire
Choosing an SEO company is not simply about finding someone who can improve your rankings.
You are choosing a partner that may influence your website, content, search visibility, marketing priorities, and growth for months or years.
So before you compare prices, ask better questions.
The answers should tell you whether the agency understands your business, has a credible process, measures meaningful outcomes, communicates clearly, and can explain exactly what you are paying for.
The Five Areas That Matter
You do not need a two hour interrogation. A good discovery conversation can reveal a great deal if you focus on five areas.
01 — Strategy
Does the agency understand your business before recommending tactics?
It should ask about your customers, priority services, sales process, locations, competitors, commercial goals, and what a valuable lead means to you.
A strategy should be built around your business rather than around a standard package.
02 — Process
Can the agency explain what actually happens after you sign?
Ask what the first 90 days look like, how opportunities are prioritised, who implements recommendations, and what your own team will need to provide.
A long list of SEO activities is not the same thing as a plan.
03 — Measurement
Find out what success actually means.
Rankings and traffic can be useful, but the agency should also understand the metrics that matter commercially: enquiries, bookings, calls, sales, qualified traffic, or revenue.
Ask to see a sample monthly report before you sign.
04 — Scope
Make sure you know what the monthly fee actually covers.
Clarify strategy, technical SEO, content, local SEO, website changes, reporting, meetings, implementation, development support, and any additional costs.
Unclear scope creates problems later.
05 — Relationship
Find out who will actually work on your account.
Ask how you will communicate, how often performance is reviewed, how urgent issues are handled, and what the agency expects from your team.
You are not only buying SEO. You are entering a working relationship.
The 15 Questions Worth Asking
Save these for your next agency discovery call.
- How will you learn our business and customers?
- What information do you need from us?
- How do you define success for our business?
- What would you prioritise during the first 90 days?
- How do you decide what to work on first?
- Who will actually implement the recommendations?
- Which KPIs do you track beyond rankings?
- How do you connect SEO to leads, bookings, or revenue?
- Can we see a sample monthly report?
- Who will actually work on our account?
- What do you expect from our team?
- What is included in the monthly fee?
- What is outside the agreed scope?
- What happens if we need to pause or end the engagement?
- What would make you recommend that we do not invest in SEO right now?
Answers That Should Concern You
Not every imperfect answer is a reason to walk away. But certain patterns deserve closer attention.
Guaranteed Rankings
Be cautious about promises of specific rankings or guaranteed positions. Search performance depends on competition, search intent, website quality, technical accessibility, authority, and changing search systems.
Ranking Only Reports
If the agency talks about rankings but cannot explain qualified traffic, conversions, enquiries, bookings, or revenue, ask how it defines business value.
Vague Deliverables
Words such as optimisation, content, backlinks, and strategy are not enough. You should understand what will actually be delivered and who is responsible for delivering it.
No Clear Implementation Plan
If nobody can explain what happens after the contract is signed, who completes the work, or what your team needs to provide, the strategy may struggle to become reality.
Pressure To Sign
You should have enough time to review the proposal, compare alternatives, ask questions, check references, and understand the agreement.
Before You Sign
Before choosing an SEO company, you should be able to answer these five questions clearly:
- Do they understand what our business actually needs?
- Can they explain what they will prioritise and why?
- Can they show how performance will be measured?
- Do we understand exactly what is included?
- Can we see ourselves working with this team long term?
